FRIENDS REMEMBERED
Dr. June Cumberland was a good friend to many, a mentor to younger women, and the centre of a group of diverse, eclectic and fascinating set of friends, colleagues, and acquaintances.
There were many sides to June Cumberland.
Besides her professional side as a hard-working child psychiatrist she took time for community work. I met her when she became a Patron of the Women’s Centre of Montreal where I was Executive Director. She was semi-retired, with a private practice after a long career at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. She always had the time to talk about the Women’s Centre, attend meetings, and she brought in other people who contributed greatly to the Centre. Known for her work with autistic children, she was also a world traveler, a raconteur, a bon vivant.
She liked to travel first class and prided herself on both her voyage on the QE 2 Atlantic crossing, as well as her trip on the Orient Express. She loved her Florida condo on the beach. In her retirement years she had time to spend at her four season getaways in the Laurentions and the Eastern Townships where her greatest pleasure was receiving her friends for meals or weekends.
As a raconteur she was unparalleled and loved to hold forth on the issues of the day in gatherings large and small.
As a bon vivant she loved the obtaining, preparation and sharing of good food, good wine, and the occasional good scotch.
In recent years she struggled with illness and she passed away in Montreal January 11, 2007 at age 84.
June Cumberland was small in stature but she left big memories for everyone who knew her.
Mona Forrest remembered her friend June Cumberland and donated $500 to the FCPA for children’s or women’s projects.
